There is no diegetic sound used in the opening credits only non-diegetic sound. The music sounds like an organ playing with mechanical, scratchy sounds as well. This makes the opening credits dramatic and creepy conforming to the genre thriller. The music starts off at the beginning with crinkling noises and gradually builds up to make it more powerful and effective. The sound for the opening credits as been synthetically produced rather than produced by instruments as it makes the non-diegetic music sound more sinister and scary. This supports the thriller genre.

The typography that is used for the opening credits is really effective as it fits really well with the hotel theme. This is because it looks like the signs you get at cheap, haunted hotels. It also flickers to portray the theme as it is a haunted hotel. The actual font of the title stays the same throughout each series of American horror story, however they change up the colours and the way that it is portrayed to make it relate more to each series and the theme of it.



The first shot that is shown shows two hands trying to break through a small gap in a wall. This is showing them trying to escape which shows how no one would want to stay in this hotel.



The next shots show a lot of blood being cleaned up or oozing out of the walls which shows that there is going to be a lot of murders and torture that will take place in the hotel. Making it look haunting and foreboding.



This shot shows a woman lying on a bed trying to sleep. I then shows to arms that reach out from within the bed sheets and grab her waist trying to pull her under. This is a disturbing and uncomfortable shot.



This shot shows someone breaking through stitches in a bed quilt or sheet and appearing from underneath it. This shows that there is going to be a lot of creepy jump scares within this series.



The next shot shows a figure wrapped up in bed sheet so that you can't see there face or there body which makes them look sinister and spooky.

This shot shows a girl sitting on the floor, she then turns into a skeleton which is a disturbing and creepy shot of someone staying in the hotel.




This shot shows a boy wearing a gas mask which covers his face which is sinister but also shows that the air around him may be toxic.



In the opening credits there are a lot of commandments from the bible which come up in the same typography as the shows title.
