The Brief:
- To evaluate the time that we spent filming for our final piece
Prep:
Our preparation for filming was positive as we organised a shooting script which clearly stated what time we were supposed to meet and what we were supposed to bring equipment wise. We were able to equally share responsibility between the four of us, as we all had a relatively equal amount of equipment to bring and be responsible for. We fortunately all brought the correct equipment, props and costumes and had no problems arise due to this.
Meeting Time
We arranged our meeting time on our shooting script and all of us were on time this hindered the timings slightly as we were a bit early getting to the location although we did manage to get the shots in the same form of lighting as previously partially due to the absent change in weather that day meaning that the lighting and setting looked very similar throughout the both of the filming sessions.
Availability
We set a date that everyone was free and chose a location that is public and gives lenient guidelines about filming so that we were able to actually film in the area we wanted to film in.
Time Management
As previously mentioned all of us were on time which did shift the time frames that we anticipated and hindered the time we arrived at the location to film however we acknowledged this and were more careful with our shots managing to do all of the shots with similar conditions as previously experienced. This again shifted all the time frames forward and enabled us time to discuss what shots we had left and how much time we needed to film them in. However we still managed the time frames that we had changed and got everything completed.
Achieved?
Yes. We managed to do what we set out to do and complete our filming in one day. We got all the shots that we wanted.
Timings
We got our timings near perfect per shot however we were hindered by being early which didn't change much but the lighting did get a bit brighter.
If I did it again would I do it differently?
No because everything was planned for and went into place.

Filming Evaluation No.2
Having looked and edited some of our shots from our first filming day, we decided that some of our shots were not as we would have liked. We decided to re-film the stabbing scene and the end shot as they did not look professional enough.
Everyone met in Loose at the agreed time of 9 a.m and we began filming at about 9:15.
The first shot that we filmed was a reaction shot of Lucy. This took a couple of tries to get the perfect reaction without it looking fake or over dramatic. Eventually, we got the right shot and we also got inspiration from my blog on stabbing reactions.
The next shot that we re-filmed was a close up of Josh pulling a bloodied knife out of Lucy. To prepare for this shot we covered the knife in fake blood and food colouring, as well as Lucy's jumper to make the shot seem as realistic as possible. At first, Josh pulled the knife out too quickly so we re-filmed it so that it was a lot slower so that you can see the blood and the knife.
Overall, I believe that this shot went very well and compared to our original shot, it looks much more realistic and professional. The camera is also a lot stiller.
The last shot that we filmed was the very end shot of Lucy lying on the ground and Josh walking away from her in the background. To prepare for this we had to find the right location in Loose valley so that the sky wasn't reflecting in the water. Eventually we found the right location to film at. The next step was to make Lucy's 'stab wound' more bloody to make it look like it had been bleeding for a long time so we simply added more fake blood to the 'wound'. We also added more blood to her hand and put dirt in her hair and on her face and bag to make it look more realistic.
Overall this shot looked very effective and was an improvement from the original shot.
In conclusion, this second filming attempt was very successful as we get everything done in time and very quickly and efficiently. The new shots looked much better than the original ones and looked more professional and realistic.
The last shot that we filmed was the very end shot of Lucy lying on the ground and Josh walking away from her in the background. Filming evaluation
After re filming certain shots for our piece, we now have to evaluate the time we spent filming, what we did and what went well/not so well.
Prep
Again we made a shooting script, including the time we were meeting and where, as well as what equipment each person was to bring. Everyone successfully brought the correct things and turned up on time, meaning we could begin filming according to schedule.
Meeting time
Our meeting time again was specified on our shooting script, and we all got there on time so we could get to filming straight away.
Availability
We chose a date when everyone was definitely free and available, and the locations were the same as last time so again easy to get to and we were allowed to film there. There were no issues with the public either so no setbacks in our filming.
Time management
Everyone arrived on time and the weather was great so we could get all the shots we needed in a short amount of time. There was a small period where it got very sunny so we had to wait for the sun to go behind the clouds again, but this wasn't a major issue as it was only as matter of minutes. We actually were so efficient timing wise that we finished just under an hour ahead of schedule.
Achieved?
We were able to re film the shots we needed of the stab and they turned out really well. We used a better blood substance, as last time we used real animal blood but it looked watery and fake. This time we used red food gel which was thicker and picked up better by the camera. We got a shot of the knife coming out of the wound, and a shot where the victim is covering the wound and gets blood all over her hands. We also got a really good tilt, which was very smooth and professional. Although it wasn't on our storyboard, we got a shot of the victim being dragged away, with her hair and arm covered in blood in frame. We felt this would be a good extra shot for our piece, as it is creepy and sinister and fits the plot and genre. Everyone in the group worked really well together as we had more of an idea of what to expect this time, so overall we achieved exactly what we wanted.
Timings
Our time management this time was great - we finished ahead of schedule, and the timings for the shots were also very good despite the sun coming out for a short period of time.
If I did it again would I do it differently?
I think this time everything went really well, so I don't think I would do anything differently. I definitely think it helped that we all knew exactly what we were doing, how we were doing it and where we were going, and because of our group efficience everything thankfully turned out exactly as expected.
Second Filming Evaluation
We all met at Lucy's house again, and walked down to our first filming location at around 9:15. We started by re filming the stabbing scenes. We decided it would be easiest to cut the jumper first so there was already a slit in it and then slide the knife in gently and remove it slowly showing the blood. We also decided to film a reaction shot of Lucy grabbing the stabbing wound and getting blood on her hand. We also decided to include a shot of Lucy being dragged through the leaves back to the stream, with an extreme close up. The picture below shows Lucy cutting through the jumper carefully, so that it is easier for Josh to slide the knife out.
We covered the slit in the jumper with red food gel. This is thicker than food colouring so looks more effective as blood and doesn't soak into the jumper as much. This makes the blood look more fresh and gorey, making our stabbing scene look more effective.
The picture below shows me filming the reaction shot of Lucy being stabbed. We decided that it would be best to film the new clips on my phone as the camera wasn't focusing properly and my phone has the best quality camera.
After filming these shots we then when back down to the stream where we re filmed the final ones of Lucy laying by the stream dead and the blood dripping down her hand. In the picture below it shows us preparing to film this next shot.
In the picture below it shows us trying to film an extreme close up of blood dripping down Lucy's hand, but again the camera wouldn't focus so we used my phone.
Overall this was a really successful morning of filming and we did it quickly and efficiently.

Filming evaluation
After filming our piece, we now have to evaluate the time we spent filming, what we did and what went well/not so well.
Prep
We had good preparation before we'd even met up as we had a shooting script, in which the time we were meeting and the equipment each person was bringing was clearly stated. This meant we could equally share responsibility and work positively together as a group, and everyone brought everything they were meant to so this meant that there were no problems in that aspect.
Meeting time
Our meeting time was specified on our shooting script, and only one of us was late due to heavy traffic. This unfortunately did mean we were slightly late getting to the location, however we managed to film everything we needed to because the weather didn't change all day so the setting and lighting looked the same at 1pm than it did at 10am.
Availability
The date we chose to film was a day where we made sure everyone was free and our location was public and easy to get to, as well as the fact we were actually allowed to film there. However there was a slight issue with this later as there was a primary school carol service on this day, so we couldn't film shots with a knife out or with the children in as this could have been seen as antisocial or dangerous behaviour, so this also made us change our schedule slightly, but thankfully we were able to be flexible with it.
Time management
Because one of us wasn't on time meaning we were slightly off schedule, we did have to shift round the shots and timings of them, but overall we managed to get a lot of shots before we had to go inside due to the rain. This factor of the weather also meant our schedule was slightly off, but when we were inside we discussed what shots we would do next and the order we would do them in so that as soon as it stopped raining we could go back out and finish all of the shots that we needed, which we did manage to do.
Achieved?
We were able to do what we originally agreed and all set out to do as a group, which was complete our filming in one day. Through teamwork and time management, we got all the shots that we needed and even more than we thought were good on the day to enable us to have extra footage to choose from in case some of our other shots didn't come out right or in case we wanted to change the storyboard.
Timings
Our time management for the whole day was excellent, despite being held back by the rain and passers by. The timings for the shots were also very good, and because the lighting didn't change all day we were able to film what we wanted to earlier in the day, but do it later in the day as the setting looked the same.
If I did it again would I do it differently?
I would do some things differently. For starters, I'd like a clear plan of what shots we're doing, when, and where, so that we have a clear and easy plan to follow which I think would make the filming go faster and more smoothly. I would also think about the weather and make sure the forecast was good as well as bring equipment such as umbrellas just in case it did start raining.

AS Media - Filming Evaluation

Also I would like to go into the day knowing what shots we were doing and when in more specifics because we never really mapped out which shots to film when and even when we did it was because we were forced in by rain and still wasn't as clear as it possibly should have been.

Filming Evaluation
We began filming our media coursework on Wednesday 21st December around 9 am at Loose Valley. Our first shots that we decided to film were of Lucy walking down the pathway besides the river. We filmed these shots fairly quickly and worked well as a group. Eve took charge of the camera as it was hers and had previously tested out different camera shots, therefore knew the camera the best. I helped to direct both Lucy and Eve to try and get the best possible shots that we could get to make them look beautiful, Whilst Josh prepared his killers costume. As evidence for this we took some pictures through our filming process to record our progress. This picture shows Eve filming Lucy walking down the pathway.
We then filmed shots of Josh walking down the pathway following the victim, whilst holding a knife to show that he had intentions of killing her. We also decided to film some extra shots of the scenery as it was a really beautiful location and we thought they would be really beneficial to our film opening if we added them in. The next picture shows us filming some of these shots.
The next shots use decided to film were the blood trickling down the stream shots. These shots were extremely hard to film because of the lighting reflection from the water so it was really difficult to capture the blood flowing down the stream. In the end we decided it would be best for Josh to put a tripod in the water of the stream where it was shallow with little reflection. Theses pictures show us filming the blood trickling down the stream.
However during our filming process of filming at Loose Valley it started raining which was effecting our shots so use had to take a break until the rain stopped. We then came back later to film shots of Lucy crossing the road to ensure that the mise-en-scene would still work and look effective.
After this we changed location to film up some stairs in Loose and along a footpath. We filmed the rest of our shots in this location. We filmed shots of Lucy walking up the stairs with Josh watching her as she did. Unfortunately after this point our camera ran out of battery, however we decided to use my phone to record the rest of our shots as use wanted to aim to get all of our shots filmed on that day to ensure the weather and lighting was consistent throughout our film opening. I then took over with filming, and swapped places with Eve.
Afterwards, we decided to film shots of Lucy dropping the phone and showing that the music had broken. We also filmed close ups of Lucy's eyes peering around. The next shots were of Josh scrapping the knife along a metal fence with Lucy in front singing. Afterwards we decided to film the stabbing shots these were fairly successful although it was difficult to pierce the knifed through the hoodie so we didn't get a big stream of blood so use may have to re-film some of these shots if they don't look good enough when use edit the shots together. This picture shows Josh stabbing the pillow with the blood pack in, with hoodie over the top.
After this we then needed to go back to Loose Valley to film the shots of Lucy lying down dead by the stream and Josh walking away with a bloody knife. We also added an extra shot of blood dripping down Lucy's hand and into the stream.
Overall, I thought that I filming was really successful and we all worked really well as a group to get the shots done. We also filmed a lot of extra shots that weren't on our storyboard to make our film opening better.

Filming Evaluation
On Wednesday 21st December, our group met up in Loose at the agreed time of 8:30. Everyone in our group arrived on time apart from one person who was late due to traffic so we were behind by 30 minutes or so.
Eventually we began filming at around 9:00 a.m and began at Loose Valley. This was where most of our shots were going to be filmed. We began with Lucy walking down the center of the valley and then we filmed some match-on-action of a side profile and then a long-shot of the back of Lucy. Overall, this shot went well as it was a simple shot, however, we had to keep of pausing our filming due to members of the public walking through our 'scene'.
Our next shots were of Josh. For these shots we copied the shots that we did with Lucy. Again this was very quick and easy to film however, the only drawback were with the public walking through our 'scene' and due to Josh holding a real knife as a prop, we had to be careful when filming with it in plain sight.
Our next shot was to film the 'cold breath' shot however, due to the weather conditions, this was hard to film and the 'cold breath' did not show up at all. As a resolution we decided to film some nature shots of the scene so that the audience can see the scene in more detail. We also had a shot of a 'danger' sign to foreshadow the plot. Overall these shots were a success and replaced the 'cold breath' shots very well.
Our final shot at this area was putting the fake blood in the stream and letting it trickle down through the water. When we filmed this at first, there was too much reflection on the surface of the water so the fake blood (food colouring) did not show up on camera, however, in 'real life' it looked very realistic. As a result, we decided to try this shot in different parts of the stream, however, this did not work as well as the first attempt that we tried. Eventually we filmed at the first location in the stream again however this time we moved the camera to a different position so that there was less reflection. Overall, this shot went very well and was shot how we all pictured it.
Our next location was on some steps about 5 minutes away from the stream. These steps were covered by foliage and then at the top of the steps was a pathway also covered in foliage. This scene looked very isolated and was perfect for our next shots.
First of all we filmed Lucy waling up the steps. We filmed at the bottom of the steps as she walked up. When she got about half way up the steps, Josh would appear, entering the shot from the right and this would then turn into an over-the-shoulder shot. Overall this shot was easy to do however, Josh would not be in the correct position so we would have to keep redoing the shot.
Our next shot was a match-on-action shot of Lucy walking up the steps. We had the camera at the top of the steps and we filmed Lucy walking up the steps towards the camera. At the step were Josh appears in the previous shot, he appears at the same time in this shot and then we had the idea of having him disappear as Lucy's body covered the whole of the bottom area of the steps so Josh walked out of frame when this happened. Overall, this shot looked very effective and sinister as the audience wonder where the killer has gone to.
We then filmed a close-up, side profile shot of Josh walking up the steps whilst scraping the knife along some metal fencing. This was a very effective shot as the sounds that were created from the sound of the knife scraping the metal.
The next few shot were of Lucy dropping her phone. This was hard to film as there was a lot of match-on-action. First of all we filmed Lucy walking away from the camera, where she would then drop her phone and the earphones would fall out. She would then have to stay in that position where we then filmed from the front of her picking up her phone. This took a couple of takes to get the shots right but eventually we got the shots that we wanted.
The next shot was an extreme close-up shot of Lucy's ear and her putting in the headphones, (when we edit the shots we will put in the distorted sound). We then had some match-on-action of her taking our the headphones and putting them and the phone away. She then walked away from the camera, where the phone will ring (when we edit the shots) and the sound will be distorted. We then did another match-on action of Lucy walking towards the camera and looking at the phone trying to answer it. Again these shots took a while to get right but we managed to do it in the end.
Our final shots were of Lucy moving her hand over the foliage and Josh pulling her towards him and then him going to stab her. For these shots we had a close-up of Lucy's hand on the foliage and then a medium shot of Josh pulling her towards him. We then had another shot of him pulling the knife towards her but stopping just as he is about to reach her body. These shots were hard to film due to the match on action and the caution of Josh using the knife. Due to the shots needing to look realistic, we had to film them a couple of times to get them right.
The final shot was to film josh stabbing through the duplicate jumper with the blood packs inside it. This was hard to film as we had to hold the hoodie with the pillow inside to make it look as human-like as possible. When Josh stabbed the pillow, the knife did not go through straight away so we had to do the shot a couple of times. Eventually we got the shot that we wanted.
The last two shots that we filmed were of Lucy walking across the road where the stream was. This was easy to film as it was a long shot of Lucy crossing the road, away from the camera. The other shot that we did was of Lucy lying on the ground at the stream, covered in dirt and blood. We did this shot last because she was covered in blood and dirt and she could be dirty and bloody when she was still 'alive'. Overall these shots went well as they were very simple and easy to film.
Overall, I believe that our filming day went well and went to plan. Our group worked well together and solved any problems that we had very quickly. The shots were done professionally and we were efficient as a group as we got the whole thing done in one day. To improve we could have chosen a day/time when the stream was less busy as there were a lot of school children walking past and due to Josh holding a knife, this could have caused some concern, however we were careful with the knife and put it away when people were walking past. Another thing that set us back was the weather as it started to rain when we were filming at the stream so we had to stop filming for 45 minutes. However, luckily, when we returned the lighting conditions did not change and the bad weather had stopped.

When Josh stabbed the pillow, the knife did not go through straight away so we had to do the shot a couple of times. Eventually we got the shot that we wanted.
The last two shots that we filmed were of Lucy walking across the road where the stream was. This was easy to film as it was a long shot of Lucy crossing the road, away from the camera. The other shot that we did was of Lucy lying on the ground at the stream, covered in dirt and blood. We did this shot last because she was covered in blood and dirt and she could be dirty and bloody when she was still 'alive'. Overall these shots went well as they were very simple and easy to film.
Overall, I believe that our filming day went well and went to plan. Our group worked well together and solved any problems that we had very quickly. The shots were done professionally and we were efficient as a group as we got the whole thing done in one day. To improve we could have chosen a day/time when the stream was less busy as there were a lot of school children walking past and due to Josh holding a knife, this could have caused some concern, however we were careful with the knife and put it away when people were walking past. Another thing that set us back was the weather as it started to rain when we were filming at the stream so we had to stop filming for 45 minutes. However, luckily, when we returned the lighting conditions did not change and the bad weather had stopped.
