As Preliminary Task

The task
Our task was to was to film and edit a short film. We were able to choose the concept and camera angles to use but we had to include the following things:

  • Opening a door
  • Over the shoulder shot
  • Exchanging a couple of lines of dialogue
  • Crossing a room
  • 180 degree rule
  • Match on action
  • shot/ reverse shot

Research and Planning

We came up with our concept as a fashion show. Our group wanted to be different and therefore wanted to show a fight at a fashion show over a blazer in our prelim. At the beginning we wanted to show a establishing shot of the stage, where the judging would take place, as Lucy was walking into the dressing room to get ready. Lucy and I would then get ready and there make their way to the stage to individually be assed on who would be right for the fashion show. I was standing on the stage being praised for how amazing the blazer looked on me when Lucy attacks me, ending the fashion show all together.

We decided to come up with the title 'Rain on your Parade'.

We decided to borrow a broom and frames from the drama studio to go into our prelim. Our group choose to film in the drama studio, corridor and on the stage to convey the atmosphere of a fashion show environment.

Filming

Our first shot was an establishing shot of the stage with the cleaner (Eve), cleaning up the stage in preparation for the show and Lucy walking across the stage to get to the dressing room.

Next we did a POV shot of Lucy waving to the cleaner and walking towards the dressing room. However, the lighting in this shot wasn't as good as we would have liked but it showed a link between the first and third shot.

The next shot was a long shot of Lucy walking down the steps towards the door. The camera pans towards the left as she walks towards the door, tracking shot. However, the pan was jolty and started before Lucy was on camera, therefore wasn't as effective as we would've liked. We finished the shot with Lucy's hand on the door. We decided to use 5 different shots as Lucy walked through the door to create  more interesting and unique shots. The second shot we used was a extreme close up of Lucy's hand on the door to show her pushing it open. We then used a close up, low angle shot to show her foot walking through the door. The nest shot was an extreme close up of Lucy foot hitting the ground. The next shot is a close up which shows Lucy walking completely through the door. We then used a tracking shot, which pans left and tilts upwards to show her walking through the second door, showing a long shot.

The next shot shows a medium shot of Lucy coming through the third door and waving as she enters the drama studio.

The next shot was a two shot which shows a conversation between Lucy and I as we walk away to begin to get ready.

We then show a close up of Lucy and I getting ready for the fashion show, using frames to represent mirrors. The camera pans to the right as Lucy and I have a conversation about who gets to wear the blazer.

The next shot that we filmed was a POV of me walking onto the stage and looking out towards the director (Josh).

We then filmed an over the shoulder shot of Josh clapping and praising me to show both Josh and I conversing on stage.

We then show another POV of me replying to Josh before Lucy slaps me and I fall to the floor. We show this in 2 shots. The first by filming Lucy running up towards the camera and covering the lens with her hand to make it look like she has slapped me. The second by showing a medium shot of me falling to the floor and Lucy standing proudly. The next camera angle is a over the shoulder shot of me getting up and Lucy standing up demanding that she should where the blazer. It also shows Josh saying no one gets to wear the blazer therefore ending the fashion show.

The next shot is a long shot of Josh walking towards the cord to pull the curtains closed. However the lighting is really dark and you can't really see Josh as the lighting is so harsh in the background.

It then shows an extreme close up shot of Josh pulling the cord in order to close the curtains.

We finally filmed a long shot of the curtains closing to symbolise that it is the end of our short film.

Post Production

We edited our short film by cutting the clips that we filmed and deleting and choosing which shots to use in our short film. We used finial cut to edit our short films on. We had to cut the shots so that when Lucy walked through the door we could use 5 different shots which all linked together fluidly.

In the beginning of our short film we decided to remove the diegetic sound from the beginning clips of Lucy walking to the changing rooms up until the conversation between me and Lucy, and include non-diegetic sound. In the image to the left it shows us removing the sound which we then deleted to get rid of it, so that you can't hear the background noise.

For the beginning of our short film we decided that we wanted to play music, (Latch - disclosure). We removed the sound attached to each clip and added in the song which we downloaded from youtube. We decided to add a fade as well so that the music didn't suddenly cut out

We added in a title page at the beginning of our short film in order to introduce it. We then added a spiral text to show who was in our film making group. At the end of our shot film we added text on top of our filmed clip saying, 'the end' which pulled together as the curtains did. It was difficult to get the timing of the curtains pulling in with the text but it looked really effective.

Audience feedback and self evaluation

The feedback that we got on our creativity of our short film was that the text at the end was really well timed at looked really effective with the close of the curtains. The audience thought that the music went really well with our genre and went well with the timing of our movements. Our match on action was also really well edited and we had a good amount of shots as Lucy walked through the door.

Although we matched all of the criteria I feel as though we could have improved our short film by adding the music, latch disclosure, back into the end of our short film so that it wasn't just silence at the end of the film. Also, we found that the tracking shots, pans, and tilts were really difficult to film as the tripod was really stiff and therefore it was hard to control the fluidity of the camera's movement. Therefore it looked jolty and clumsy. We also found that some of the shots that we took were really out of focus and therefore looked bad when put together with the rest of the film. If we had more time we would have re-filmed this in order for the quality to look better. We also had to film change location from the drama studio to the stage so some of the back drop may have looked out of place and random at times. In one of the scenes I accidentally refer to the 'blazer' as 'coat' so we would have to re-film this to make sure that our script is consistent. In the scene where I get up and Lucy and I have been told neither of us can wear the blazer', Lucy smiles too much therefore looks as if she is coming out of character. Also we needed to cut the end of that scene more as you can hear a second of background sound that wasn't intended. The lighting in some of our scenes was really harsh at the background which meant that it was really dark on the actors in it.
